Cold-formed steel (CFS) framing is galvanized steel roll-formed into studs, tracks, and trusses at room temperature — which is exactly what gives it its precision and strength. Your home arrives as a complete, pre-engineered framing kit: every stud computer-cut to your exact plan, engineered and stamped for your county's wind rating, and assembled on site with bolts and screws. No welding, no guesswork, no lumber pile.

What Nobody Tells You

A Red Iron Kit Is a Shell. A CFS Kit Is a House.

Red iron kit pricing looks tempting — sometimes cheaper than a CFS kit. But that price buys you columns, beams, and skin. When the red iron goes up, the framing has only started. A CFS kit may cost more on the quote sheet, but when it's up, the framing is finished — and that changes the real cost.

After a red iron shell goes up, you still have to:

  • Stick-frame every exterior wall inside the steel shell so you have something to insulate and hang drywall on
  • Stick-frame every interior partition wall — a whole second framing phase with a second crew
  • Pay for that wood, that labor, and those extra weeks on top of the "cheap" kit price
  • Accept wood back into the building — along with the mold, rot, and termite risk you went to steel to avoid

When a CFS kit goes up:

  • Exterior walls are framed — ready for insulation and drywall
  • Interior walls are framed too — every partition is part of the engineered kit
  • One framing phase, one crew, one timeline — trades get started sooner
  • Steel top to bottom: nothing in the frame to feed mold or termites, nothing to rot or warp

Engineered for Hurricane Country

Every kit is pre-engineered and stamped for your county's wind rating — 115 to 150+ mph across our region. The engineering is done before it ships, which also smooths permitting.

Mold Doesn't Grow on Steel

In our humidity, wood framing absorbs moisture, swells, and feeds mold. Steel absorbs nothing. There is simply no food source for mold or mildew inside your walls.

Termites Can't Eat It

Eastern NC is prime termite territory. A steel frame takes termites, carpenter ants, and rot off the worry list permanently — no treatments, no inspections finding surprises.

Insurance Advantages

Non-combustible, wind-rated, pest-proof construction is exactly what insurers want to see near the coast. Steel-framed homes frequently qualify for lower premiums than wood-framed.

CFS weighs far less than red iron, so it doesn't demand the heavier (more expensive) foundations structural steel requires — more savings that never show up on a kit quote.

Our honest take: red iron still wins for one thing — massive clear spans. If your project is a large shop, arena, or warehouse-style building with wide-open interior space, red iron is the right tool and we'll tell you so. But for a home — a place with bedrooms, bathrooms, and walls — cold-formed steel gets you a stronger, healthier, faster build for the money. That's why it's our recommendation, not just something we sell.
